Objections to the proposals
These are the most important reasons for objecting to Tesco's proposals:
- Traffic – Tesco’s own figures show an additional 5000 vehicles a day would use the Tolworth roundabout causing extra congestion in an already severely congested area.
- Air pollution – the Tolworth stretch of the A3 is highly polluted. Additional traffic will only makes things worse – a real threat to some people’s health and quality of life.
- Impact on Tolworth Broadway’s shops – we fear a Tesco superstore would hit our local small retailers on the Broadway, and many fear closure.
- Inappropriate housing – the housing Tesco are proposing is dense, out of character with the surrounding areas and does not provide enough affordable housing for families.
- This proposal is against Kingston Council policy for this site – which is for appropriate housing and community use – not retail. That policy was decided in a democratic process.
- Infrastructure issues – There is nothing within this proposal to identify how any additional doctors, dentists and schools would be provided.
